その日、私はキッチンの調理台の隅にいくつか転がっているタマネギを見ながら考えた。そのタマネギは昨日、近くのグローサリーで安く買ってきたものだ。タマネギの表面には少し土がついていた。土が少しついているタマネギは、起き抜けの私を少し和ませた。サンフランシスコは坂の街だが、坂の途中にいろいろお気に入りの店がある。そのグローサリーもその一つだ。
このサンフランシスコに引っ越してきて、ちょうど一年。以前、私が居た東海岸とは随分違う・・・。
私は、東海岸からこちらに移住し、サンフランシスコ市警に勤めて一年になる、まだ新米のデカだが、このメイソン・ストリートの人々の愛想のよさが気に入っている。付近を歩くと、いつもグローサリーの兄さんが、『ヨー、マイブラザー、カルロス』って、声をかけてくる。この辺りは、イタリア系アメリカ人が多く住んでいて、私は彼らの気風が好きだ。隣り合ってチャイナタウンがあるから、食べ物には事欠かない。
この辺は、北の浜（ノースビーチ）って言われてる。だいたいイタリア系と中華系アメリカ人が住んでるんだ。でも、とてもオープンな街だから、他のいろんな国々からアメリカ合衆国に移民してきた人たちが、様々に店を構えて軒を連ねてる。タイ料理、ベトナム料理、日本料理もある。
東海岸に居た頃、私が育った家では日本食を食べるという習慣がなかった。それで、はじめてこの街で日本食を食べてみたんだ。鮨ってのは変わった食べ物だと思った。私は魚を生で食すっていうのに最初抵抗があったんだ。だけど、食べてみると意外にも旨かった。キッコーマンがまた、マグロに合うんだ。そんな風に日本食もよく食べるようになった。この前、ソバってのを食べてみた。日本のヌードルだ、でもウドンとは違う。私は、ソバの方が好きになった。
両親共に連邦警察に勤務していた。だから私も今の職に就いたのかもしれない。私は市警で、連邦警察ではないが・・・。いろいろな事柄がどこかで繋がっていることがあるんだ。こっちに越してきて、この街は本当に超多民族社会だと実感してる。それはすごく風通しが良くて好きな面なんだ。アジアに面した土地だから、いつの間にかアジアン・カルチャーも吸収しているのに気付く。ノースビーチのイタリアンとチャイニーズが混在した佇まいを、私は愛している。ここで今の職に就いていることにも誇りを感じるよ。
そんなことを考えながら、転がっていたタマネギをカッティングボードの上で刻みながら、お湯を沸かした。パスタを作るつもりだ・・・。
昨日、パンダ・コウイチロウが言った言葉が気になっていた。
「ヘイヘイ、Let me see your funky sign!」

The Legend of the Franciscan is a fiction film about a guy who was taught
Wong Fei-hong's way of the Greater Hong Kong area, so we went to see
the place, and we got some feeling about Tao, that is teaching us,
"The Supreme Rule is No Rule."
We saw the historical point (peek) of the admirable GOLDEN HARVEST
memorial. Yes, we got some feeling of the Hong Kong Movie Spirits!

I was thinking what is individualism, and we are surrounded by lots of civilized systems. In this society, easily we are in the state of losing our personalities. We are getting so much information from the inter-net, TV, magazines. So, we are easy to be consumers. Sometimes we are afraid of being "out-of-date" persons. That's why we are consuming state-of-the-art technologies. Many people are buying high-tech products, but they use them one or two times, and put them in storage. It is difficult to have balance between being present man and man with individualism....
In a commentary of a film “Black Rain” directed by Ridley Scott, Michael Douglas, actor said that the film was about individuality spirits in the individuality of the US versus the Japanese team efforts which is not meaning standing out of whole, which Japanese people want to be a part of.
The two countries are having so different nature surroundings and histories.
Surroundings are the very big influences for everyone to have their own personalities or nationalities, I think.
Maybe Emerson was a transcendentalist and an individualist who was really influenced by nature, the natural things. When he was living in America, the surroundings are so near to nature. So, he could start his unique philosophy that differs from civilized European societies. Of course, America had civilized cities at that time, but it had a big wilderness very nearly to the towns. Nature was the key to his own made philosophy.
Emerson’s ideas were like this.
Nature is the teacher of how we live. Nature will teach us the order for our living.
The great man is he who in the midst of the crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude.
Emerson’s philosophy was opposite to the rapid civilization of that time. He wanted to escape from the social life and he wanted to enter the real wilderness and nature. He, however, did not enter the wilderness really. His follower Thoreau did.
Emerson’s teachings were rather radical than his actual actions. Maybe He was influenced by the life of Wordsworth in the Lake District, UK. Emerson said like, “Enter the nature, be independent, trust yourself,” again and again. Although he was twisted, Rambo the filmic hero was the Emerson type hero.
Emerson’s words were how you can get individuality. He said, “Ships are going zigzag on the ocean, but if you watch from far place, you can see the tendency of the ship’s direction.” He said that is one’s tendency or individuality. In the nature one could find his own individuality truly, he thought.
Emerson was proud of America, and he really wanted cultures born in America, maybe, which is equal to Shakespeare of England.
After Emerson’s time, America did bear international cultural influences, (like Star Wars, Superman, Rambo, etc.)
Star Wars is a very American culture that has strong influence to the world like Shakespeare or Sophocles. I think the creator George Lucas got Emerson’s ideas for the several parts. Sometimes, Star Wars the film is said that the film is a religion. 1/6 of the world population saw the film. When Lucas was a student, he took classes of anthropology. In 1983, Lucas met Joseph Campbell, a mythologist to hear his lectures. Campbell said that Star Wars is re-invention of the mythology for the contemporary viewers.
Lucas was born and raised in a strongly Methodist family. After inserting religious themes into Star Wars, he would eventually come to identify strongly with the Eastern religious philosophies he studied and incorporated into his movies, which were a major inspiration for “the Force.” Lucas eventually came to state his religion was “Buddhist Methodist.”
Obi-Wan and Master Yoda’s teachings are similar to Emerson’s. Here are the Star Wars quarts:
Obi-Wan: “The Force … it’s an energy field created by all living things.”
“ It surrounds us and penetrates us. It binds the galaxy together.”
Obi-Wan: “You must do what you feel is right, of course.”
Obi-Wan: “The Force can have a strong influence on the weak-minded.”

Star Wars stresses the self-destructive nature of fear, anger, hate, selfishness, and lust for power. In Episode I, Yoda summarizes stating, "Fear is the path to the dark side: fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate. Hatred leads to suffering." Patience, discipline, humility, monasticism, respect for one's elders, peace with one's self, trust in things spiritual over things physical, and self-sacrifice are extolled as virtues.
Emerson's philosophy's characteristic was to trust nature, to trust yourself, to get power of nature that will penetrate you and teach you, to be independent even in the cities remembering the law of nature, and so on.
Some parts of his teaching were like Obi-Wan and Master Yoda's in Star Wars.
Emerson said that you can receive a divine wisdom whenever a mind is simple. The complexities make you powerless.
Maybe many people can understand the teaching and feel it is right in some parts of his teaching, but it is not that easy for contemporary men living as the big consumers.
However it is not easy, the teaching is useful for us.
Man postpones or remembers. He does not live in present. He cannot be happy and strong until he too lives with nature in the present, said Emerson.
Sometimes we live just in our memories, but it is not so useful. The present is the most important.
Our regrets are false players. True prayers are heard throughout nature. The secret of fortune is joy in our hands. Be self-helping man. Nothing can bring you peace but yourself.
Insist on yourself. Never imitate.
Nature might be telling us that.
The Law of Nature is over the existences of the cities, nations, kings, the rich men, poets, or other things. The White man has lost his aboriginal strength. Nowadays, everyone not just white-men is loosing that kind of the power.
Emerson's saying makes us remember that.
